In a shocking incident reported from Telangana, a secretariat official went to lengths to get his hands on Rs 7 crore life insurance amount. The man ended up killing his driver, and faked his own death to somehow get the Rs 7.4 crore insurance amount. However, the man couldn’t evade karma and justice for long, and ended up getting arrested. The incident was reported from Medak district, Telangana.


The shocking case of whodunnit almost reads like the script of a potboiler. However, the incident involves a death of an innocent man, who was killed by a man blinded by greed. The accused has been identified as 44-year-old Pathloth Dharma Naik, an official at the Telangana Secretariat and the victim was identified as Babu.

According to reports, Pathloth was in debts due to stock market investments. To get out of the mess, he purchased as many as 25 policies cumulatively worth Rs 7.4 crores. He then hatched a plan with his family to find a man who with whom he shared some resemblance with, and then taking his life to claim the insurance.

Earlier on January 9, a car was found by the cops engulfed in flame and the cops found Pathloth’s IDs. The fact that the body was completely charred and the IDs remained unscathed, alerted the cops, who investigated the case as that of a fraud.

The Facts of the Matter

In an incident reminiscent to popular 2021 Malayalam film Kurup, where a character decided to fake his own death to get insurance money, a Telangana-based man was recently arrested for similar charges. The man, an official with the state’s Secretariat office, reportedly killed a driver, and faked his own death, all to get Rs 7.4 crore insurance amount.

Real World ‘Kurup’ in Telangana

In a topsy-turvy-twisted story, that can put an Abbas-Mastan film to shame, the accused, identified as 44-year-old Pathloth Dharma Naik, hatched a plan with his family to murder a person resembling him. All to get out of the debts he had accrued.

His arrest comes week after a burning car was discovered in Telangana, throwing the cops in tizzy. After locating the accused alive, the cops brought him into questioning. During questioning, the accused admitted of having plotted the crime with his wife and sister.

Cops Find Burning Car

Earlier on January 9, the cops received an alert of a burning car fallen into a gorge. The cops initially registered the case as that of an accident. However, during investigation, the cops saw how the deceased driver’s body had been completely charred while his IDs were completely unscathed.

Suspecting that the IDs were planted, and the “accident” could be be a murder done for insurance. The police started investigating further. On checking CCTV footage, and tracing call records, the police was able to nab the accused.

Accused Gives Shocking Confession

During interrogation, the accused claimed that he was in debts for Rs 85 lakhs due to financial losses in stock market. To somehow get out of the mess he had created, he involved his family and hatched a plan. He bought 25 insurance policies amounting to Rs 7.4 crores.

The second step of the plan was to find someone who would resemble him. He started looking for a person and his search soon ended when he found a daily wager near Nampally metro station. The daily wager, who was soon to be the victim, was identified as Babu.

In accordance to the plan, the accused shaved the victim’s head to make him appear more like him, and then hit him with an axe. The accused then put the victim’s body inside a car, and burned it.

Family had Escaped to Indore, MP

The last part of the plan was the accused’s wife filing a complaint with the cops. After much investigation, the cops were able to find the accused’s whereabouts. He had fled to Indore, Madhya Pradesh, with his wife. Meanwhile, his wife was trying hard to collect the Rs 7.4 crore insurance amount.
